Every person has a talent, but not everyone realizes or accepts it. Some may even fear facing their talent or put up obstacles to discovering it.
What sets a coach who is also a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst apart from others? They possess more tools, have explored a broader range of emotional scenarios with patients, and in most cases, have spent more hours attending to their own psychoanalysis to understand themselves better.
What do their jobs entail? In sports, I help athletes overcome mental obstacles and improve their performance. For example, I might work on a tennis player's serve, support a runner regaining confidence after an injury, or talk with an artist before they perform on major stages like Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In finance, my work and expertise are strictly focused on the influence of emotions and emotional states in high-performance activities like sports and investing. Emotional states can make the difference between talented individuals succeeding or failing, making or losing money in the same situation. The same principle applies to sports.
For instance:
Does a past bad investment decision influence a new investment? Emotionally, it shouldn't, but it often does. Working on the psychological state of mind helps prevent breakdowns and unforced mistakes, and leads to maximizing gains and aggressiveness when an opportunity arises.
Making money, winning, and succeeding foster self-confidence, and the same goes for the reverse. It's my goal to help people understand that self-confidence affects both their personal lives and their jobs directly.
In teamwork, I help participants identify conflicts that I see as an outsider and those that aren't openly discussed. This improves communication, self-confidence, and confidence in others.
Who uses psychology and coaching in the U.S.?
Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, and Kobe Bryant worked with George Mumford. Phil Jackson, the coach of the Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers, did as well.
Nick Faldo and Greg Norman worked with Richard Coop.
What can help identify when working with a psychologist and coach might be beneficial? Phrases like "I can do better...but get easily distracted, can't focus, don't dare, or I'm afraid of..." could be indicators. An abrupt change in performance or mood, not explained by an obvious physical condition, might also signal the need for such help.
This work in sports, finance, and art is not only useful for performance but also for enhancing daily life, as it helps improve focus on health, relationships, family, and hobbies.
Why doesn't everyone use psychology? Resistance is a characteristic of the mind, which might sound paradoxical. Beyond this essential factor, the stigma and resistance to improvement, as well as the fear of delving into one's own mind, can be experienced, mostly before taking action.
Freud explained this paradox in his article "Those Who Failed After Succeeding" as an unconscious mechanism, which includes those who have already succeeded.
The difficulty of discussing personal matters may be another reason.
